General Info

Restaurante San Miguel sits about 800 meters west of the local school in La Javilla, Bejuco, Provincia de Guanacaste (50906), Costa Rica, and it’s one of those places that quietly leaves a good impression. The setting feels relaxed from the moment you arrive. It’s not flashy or crowded, which actually adds to the charm. The atmosphere leans casual and quiet, making it a comfortable stop for travelers exploring the area as well as locals looking for a calm place to enjoy a good meal.

Walking in, the first thing you notice is how welcoming the space feels. The layout is simple, and practical touches like a clean restroom and comfortable seating make the visit easy and convenient. It’s the kind of restaurant where you can slow down, enjoy your food, and actually hear the conversation at your table. Because of that relaxed vibe, it’s also a spot that tourists often appreciate after a long day of exploring Guanacaste.

The menu focuses on a few standout dishes that keep guests coming back. One plate that immediately caught my attention was the Ceviche de Pescado. Fresh, bright, and full of flavor, it delivers that classic coastal taste you hope to find when dining in Costa Rica. The balance of citrus and seafood feels refreshing and light, making it a perfect starter.

Another memorable option is the Atún Tempura. The texture is what really stands out here. The tuna remains tender inside while the tempura coating adds a satisfying crunch. It’s a dish that feels both comforting and a little elevated at the same time, and it’s easy to see why it’s highlighted on the menu.

For something more filling, the Crispy Scalloped Potatoes are a great choice. They arrive golden and crisp, with layers that stay creamy inside. It’s a simple dish, yet it complements many items on the menu and adds a hearty element to the meal.

Of course, saving room for dessert is absolutely worth it here. The Chocolate Cake is easily one of the restaurant’s highlights. Rich, soft, and deeply chocolatey, it’s the kind of dessert that feels indulgent without being overwhelming. Many reviews mention the desserts specifically, and after trying it, that praise makes perfect sense.

Overall, Restaurante San Miguel offers a relaxed dining experience where the food speaks for itself. The quiet atmosphere, approachable menu, and welcoming setting make it a pleasant stop for visitors exploring Bejuco and the surrounding Guanacaste region. Whether you’re stopping in for fresh seafood, a comforting side dish, or simply a great dessert, the experience feels easy, authentic, and enjoyable.

“ We went during Christmas week. Was so good we went back a few nights later. We have been from Liberia to Arenal and Montezuma. This is probably the best restaurant you will find in Costa Rica. Everything was amazing. The staff was perfect. The owner/chef continually came out and checked on us. if you’re anywhere near this area, you have to check this place out. ”

“ The chef here is one of a kind. The most delicious tuna carpaccio I’ve eaten. Every bite as good or better than the last. A quiet, intimate, charming dining area, mostly outdoors, under palm fronds, with very sweet and gracious service. Ate here 2/3 nights spent near San Miguel, and if/when we come back to Costa Rica, we won’t miss the chance to dine again. Muchas gracias ”

“ Hidden gem that our good friend introduced to us. Chef owned and operated which you can definitely tell in the food, service and craft cocktails . Started out with some fresh lime margaritas served traditional...we shared some tuna carpaccio.,octopus and lobster bisque,(meal.in itself) I had the tuna tempura salad which was crispy on the outside and fantastically tender and rare on the inside well executed . The pictures attached don't do it justice, go ahead and make a reservation, you won't be discounted . Fresh locally sourced proteins, vegetables and fresh fruit.. I will be back, thank you , ”

“ Totally blown away place in the middle of of nowhere! We were shocked by the quality of food and chef in the off-road part of Nicoya. This is by far the best restaurant we’ve eaten during our 3 weeks stay in Costa Rica. We ate here several times during our stay so would definitely recommend this place for everybody who like good quality food and lounge atmosphere!:) ”

“ Worth every penny (or CRC)! Fantastic service, amazing ceviche de pescado, lobster bisque and their fish of the day, Snook, was expertly prepared, plated and served with the utmost friendly professionalism. Wine was pretty darn good too :) Here during rainy season and reservation was not necessary. ”

“ We’re sitting at San Miguel right now and already planning our next visit—that’s how good this place is. We ordered the ribeye and the seafood plate with sea bass, shrimp, and lobster, and it’s the best food we’ve had in a long time—and we are huge foodies who travel for great meals. Every bite was perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented, and cooked with real care and creativity. What made the night even more special was meeting Pablo, the owner. We spent time talking with him about his life and travels around the world, and you can truly taste those experiences in his cooking. His passion and story are woven into every detail of this restaurant. The atmosphere is stunning—warm, elegant, and relaxed in that effortless Costa Rican way. Incredible food, heartfelt hospitality, and a setting to match. San Miguel is an absolute gem. ”

“ What a jewel in the middle of paradise. I saw all the five star reviews and had to see for myself. I went with my wife and three sisters-in-laws. Everyone enjoyed their meal very much. Two of us ordered beef tenderloin, which was perfectly done. ”
